A handy DIY Guide to replacing a Spiral Balance

First of all you want to measure the top, bottom, sash box and horn size (if present).

Once you’ve taken the measurements of the window you want to look for a supplier of spiral and spring balances online. I personally recommend Mighton.

After you received your order proceed to lay out a dust sheet in front of the window and begin to score the back of the staff beading connecting to the sash box. You then want to remove the beading by prying it off with care.

Then you want to have a partner with you to hold up the window while you use the spiral balance key to remove the springs from the side of the window.

Once you’ve loosen up both sides of the windows you want to take out the window and then unscrew the springs at the top and swap them out with the new ones. Make sure to dispose of the springs properly.

Finally hook the window onto the springs at the bottom on both sides after you turn the springs to apply the right tension on them. Put back on the staff beading and you’ve done it.
